The term Navagraha denotes the nine celestial bodies which are central to astrological calculations & beliefs (and not the nine planets as it is frequently erroneously translated). The Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the two shadow planets Raahu and Kethu constitute the Navagrahas.

A pilgrimage town cluster that has been gaining popularity in recent times is the set of Navagraha temples situated around the temple town of Kumbakonam in eastern Tamil Nadu. The Navagraha temples denote a set of nine temples tied together by their association with the nine celestial bodies or the Navagrahams.

The Nine Navagraha Temples are:

SURYA BHAGAWAN (SUN) – SURIYANAAR KOVIL
CHANDRA BHAGAWAN (MOON) – THINGALOOR
ANGARAKAN/MANGALA BHAGAWAN (MARS) – VAITHEESWARAN KOVIL
BUDHA BHAGAWAN (MERCURY) – TIRUVENGADU
GURU/BRIHASPATI/DAKSHINAMURTHY BHAGAWAN (JUPITER) – ALANGUDI
SHUKKRA BHAGAWAN (VENUS) – KANJANOOR
SHANI BHAGAWAN (SATURN) – TIRUNALLARU
RAAHU BHAGAWAN – TIRUNAGESHWARAM
KETHU BHAGAWAN – KEEZHPERUMPALLAM
