Lord Jagannatha Wins 1st Place in Ojai July 4th Parade!

Because of the wonderful support from so many cooperative Vaishnavas, the July 4th Rathayatra parade in Ojai was an overwhelming success. Our parade float was clearly the most colorful and festive entry in the parade and because of that we won 1st place in the float division! Thank you to all who helped in so many ways!

Of course it is nice to receive such a great distinction like a 1st place trophy, but the real prize was the numerous individuals who stepped forward after seeing Lord Jagannatha's huge chariot to introduce them selves. Many felt compelled to proclaim their allegiance to the Vedic conclusion that Krishna unequivocally summarizes in the Bhagavad Gita:

"O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread." - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 7 “Knowledge of the Absolute ", Text 7. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/7/7/en

At one point in the parade the pujari riding on the cart spotted a women in full military dress saluting Lord Jagannatha as his chariot rolled by!

Those who pursue an impersonal relationship with the supreme have no access to the more intimate pastimes of the Supreme Lord. That explains for why their gatherings tend to be very uninspiring and boring. They teach that there is only ONE cosmic consciousness and that liberation is to MERGE into that one big vibrating state of awareness. Just how much fun could that really be if there is no opportunity to have a loving exchange with anyone else? Why wait. Just go to the forest now and sit by yourself completely undisturbed if that is your concept of heaven.

Contrary to popular believe, merging into one big fireball of energy is actually the lowest stage of spiritual awareness not the highest stage. Krishna provides a destination for those who wish to aspire for that state of Non-Being, in the place know at the Brahmajoti, which is the covering that emanates from the spiritual worlds. Yes it is part of God's energy, but it is manifest from his lower energies. It is therefore not satisfying for the individual soul who has an eternal form designed to experience bliss and knowledge.

Real Spiritual Life is A Grand Celebration!

When we see devotees beautifully dancing in front of the Rathcart we get a small idea of what real spiritual life is all about. We can see how it is filled with wonderful transcendental exchanges between the Supreme Lord and His numerous fragmental parts. Because God is Eternal, and because we are small portions of his eternal nature, we are also eternal.

The parade called many people to come forward and express their interest in learning more about how to cultivate their eternal relationship with God based on reliable Vedic teachings. That is exactly what the purpose is at each of our bi-monthly AVA meetings. (1st &3rd Tuesdays every month at 7:30 pm.) I invite all of you to take advantage of that time to understand who God is and how to restore your lost relationship with him. If you do then next year, when we invite Lord Jagannatha to come to Ojai again, there is a good chance that you will be one of the blissful souls to sing in the Kirtan, Dance in the front of His grand chariot and enjoy sumptuous prasadam in the park with other great souls!

Prelude to This Month’s Feature Article

Looking for a Deal, a Shortcut, or a Loophole?

Everyone is looking for a deal. When we go shopping, we head to the places which have the big signs indicating that there is a "SALE." We want a bargain.

In the same way we feel good when we learn a more efficient way to complete a task. When we discover how we can do something quicker or less costly, we feel triumphant and want to show a friend how they can also benefit from that new understanding.

A good friend once shared with me an example of how he "Beat The System" when he was a kid. At that time he lived in Anaheim, California right next to the then New Disneyland. When it originally opened it was surrounded by orange orchards and wasn't secured like the fort it is today. He and his friends figured out a way to sneak into Disneyland thru the tunnels that connected under the park which allowed the maintenance employees who worked there to move around. Of course sneaking into Disneyland was dishonest, but it was typical for mischievous boys. They found a way for them to ride the Matterhorn without having to pay for it!

Lawyers are professional loophole hunters. They are hired to find a legal way to get us out of trouble with the law. They do that by presenting information which gives the jury "Reasonable Doubt" to acquit the allegations held against their client. Insurance agencies are also notorious for adding all sorts of loopholes to the fine print on contracts. Then when someone attempts to make a claim they will often point back to the clause which provides them the legal grounds to deny a claim payment.

Tom Sawyer Scheme

One of the most well known stories about Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer is how he got someone else to whitewash the fence he was tasked to do! He got out of this chore simply by making his work look like a lot of fun, and in this way he convincing a friend to do it for him!

In this case the loophole Tom cam up with was actually a sign of his (manipulative) intelligence. Similarly when we convince a police officer not to give us a ticket for a traffic violation, we feel both relieved and special.

Corporations use loopholes to avoid honoring a "Rebate" they promises in order to get us to purchase their product. They could just lower the cost of the product at the cash register, but instead they ask the customer to hunt down a rebate form, an envelope, a stamp and then meticulously follow all the rebate instructions perfectly. If you fail to submit the UPC symbol, the original receipt, and the form all within a small window of time you will not get your rebate check 6-8 weeks later when you probably forgot about it anyway!

Smart people are careful to remember the adage: "If it's too good to be true,… it probably isn't." Those who put all their funds into Bernie Madeoff's investment schemes never stopped to consider how his firm could consistently outperform the rest of the investment markets. On the surface it appeared that they were making a fortune, but due to the nature of human greed and laziness, his clients forgot to consider the important concept of statistical odds. Consequently many people lost their entire life savings.

There was no safety net for anyone who invested in the stock market. Not enough people asked the right questions and there were no procedures in place to stop the runaway train of an economic collapse. Those who lost their retirement funds could not find any loopholes to restore their life savings and there wasn't a loophole Bernie Madeoff could crawl thru to save him from the 150 years in prison jail sentence.

Every Action Leads to Appropriate Re-Action.

The moral of the story is that when reality catches up with our behavior, the results of our actions finally come due. If those actions are not guided by divine wisdom, everyone suffered the consequences.

Unfortunately the nature of Kali Yuga is that the overwhelming majority of the population tends to be completely unconscious about what they are doing and why they are doing it. Cheating is one of our four human flaws and what makes it particularly insidious is that we sometimes consciously indulge in cheating even when we know it's wrong!

Many people talk about the law of karma, and some people are careful about what they do because they are conscious about not wanting to accrue "Bad" karma. However very few people are capable of explaining how the mechanics of Karma works!

If we don't want to end up getting cheated like the clients of Bernie Madeoff, then we have to be careful about not cutting corners in our spiritual life. Any fool can say he doesn't believe in Karma, (and most fools do) but we can understand by observing the behavior of all the people we anoint with the reverent title of "Mystic," "Prophet", "Sage" or "Saint" etc., that they were aware of and taught about a divine universal law which Jesus summarized with the simple sutra: "As you sew, so shall you reap."

Self Realization or Self Deception?

Nearly everyone sees themselves in a positive light, and yet every day the police stay very busy tracking down those who break the law. Denial is one of the most common forms of mental illness. We see it all around us in others all the time, but rarely stop to consider what we might be running away from or refusing to look more closely at. There are a plethora of charlatans willing to reassure you that despite any phobias', bad habits, social shortcomings, or narcissistic tendencies one has, they need not change anything in their life! In fact the people who make a business helping others deceive themselves often include in their advertising. "NO need to change your religion, No need to change anything! EVERYONE Welcome."

People who struggle to give up alcohol, cigarettes, gambling, lying, excessive eating, pornography, or petty theft often know they have a problem but do little or nothing to overcome it. Smokers are very effective about rationalizing their habit, but it is their lungs they are coating with charcoal and nicotine. They will be the ones who will be hacking and out of breath after carrying in the groceries from the car, not anyone else.

God is in the Details!

Similarly the trend today is to acknowledge a "Higher Power" as long as it doesn't rely on any tradition and isn't too specific.

It's acceptable to have strong spiritual "Feelings" but it's not cool to have any "Beliefs." It's OK to be spiritual, but not religious. It's vogue to be Green, but it's heretical to point out that a Carnivorous Environmentalist is an oxymoron! It's meaningful to say you believe in an eternal soul, but not appreciated to speak about that philosophically. It's fashionable to meditate, but not pray. It looks good to vibrate OM, but not Hare Krishna.

Only a small proportion of the population is more serious about studying the nature of the soul then in simply "Looking Good" with their contemporaries. Often when people start to break away from the "Peer Pressure" that keeps them locked into contemporary conditioning, they are anxious to know just what DOES determine how their eternal soul will prosper in the future. We have explained on many occasions how the Bhagavad Gita proves a clear straightforward answer to that question:

yam yam vapi smaran bhavam tyajaty ante kalevaram

tam tam evaiti kaunteya sada tad-bhava-bhavitah

Whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, O son of Kunti, that state he will attain without fail. - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 8 “Attaining The Supreme", Text 6. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/8/6/en

It is quite common that when people hear this verse they simply decide that they will "Remember" good thoughts when they know they are about to die. This is another symptom of the "Loophole" mentality. Sometime people actually postulate: "So I can do whatever I want between now and then, as long as I chant Hare Krishna when I take my last breath…. Right?"

Well… not exactly.

Three Near Death Experiences!

Those who think like that fail to realize how deeply our subtle consciousness is burned into our being. I have personally had three near death experiences and the only one I was partially able to prepare myself for it was when I had Malaria and a 107degree temperature. However at that time I was so overwhelmed with fever and serious discomfort that even under that situation it was difficult to focus on anything for too long.

Both of the other life threatening events were from electrical shock and in both cases I was caught completely off guard. On one of those occasions I did see my life "Rush By" as it is often described. On the other occasion I just happened to be chanting my Japa in Vrindaban India!

Who can predict what their future holds and where our attention will be went our body finally collapses and the soul is forced to move on? The important point we must all each consider is that the Vedas offer a nice process to help train our consciousness how to respond properly under any circumstance. We can either accept that bona-fide process or look for a Bernie Madeoff guru that offers a cosmic loophole and then "Do Our Own Thing." However caveat emptor. (Buyer Beware!) That is the privilege of free will but remember there are no cosmic loopholes. We either act in harmony with the universe, or in conflict against it and in each case they return the appropriate result.

"A person who accepts the path of devotional service is not bereft of the results derived from studying the Vedas, performing sacrifices, undergoing austerities, giving charity or pursuing philosophical and fruitive activities. Simply by performing devotional service, he attains all these, and at the end he reaches the supreme eternal abode." - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 8 “Attaining The Supreme", Text 28. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/8/28/en

"That action performed in illusion, in disregard of scriptural injunctions, and without concern for future bondage or for violence or distress caused to others is said to be in the mode of ignorance." - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 18 “Conclusion. The perfection of Renunciation", Text 25. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/18/25/en

This Issue HOT LINK: The Death Clock

Some people will simply NOT want to check out this months Hot Link. Here we have a software program that appears to be based on the actuary statistics used by Life Insurance Companies. It's easier to be frivolous about life when we spend most of our doing things designed to distract us from our own mortality. One of the most powerful meditations a person can do is sit down and write their own obituary. That's a guided meditation you aren't going to be asked to take at any New Age gathering because it brings up just too much ultra reality.

Now however you have an opportunity to stare your own death in the face if you have the guts to do it. One can imagine whatever silly thing one wants about being in the moment or the power of now but there are no loopholes about the inevitability of death. Punch in the basic simple information and the death clock will tell you what time on the specific day you are statistically most likely to die!

“No Cosmic Loopholes"

Rascals Think, "I Can Deceive God."

The following exchange was between His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and some disciples that took place in Mayapur, India, on January 16, 1976.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: These modern so-called scientists have much in common with Hiranyakasipu -- such a big demon. His only idea was, "The devatas, the demigods -- they prevail over us sometimes. But now I shall attack them and prevail over them. And because I am now virtually immortal, what can they do? They cannot kill me. So I will go on with my demonic activities, and they will not be able to do anything."

Hiranyakasipu did not know that by trying to achieve immortality for his material body, he was exhibiting the greatest foolishness.

When Brahma, Krsna's first created being in the universe, told Hiranyakasipu, "No, no, it is not possible," still Hiranyakasipu expected, "Yes, somehow I shall become immortal."

Lord Brahma flatly said, "No, no, this is not possible. I myself am not immortal. How can I give you immortality?"

But Hiranyakasipu would not hear even Lord Brahma. He thought, "In a roundabout way I shall befool this man Brahma."

Hiranyakasipu said, "All right, sir, then give me this benediction."

"What is that?"

"I'll not die on the land."

"All right."

"Nor shall I die in the water."

"Yes."

"Nor in the air."

"Yes."

So Hiranyakasipu thought, "All three realms are eliminated. So where can I die? After all, there are only three realms -- land, water, air. And Brahma has given me the benediction that I shall not die anywhere within these three. So I have cheated Brahma."

And then Hiranyakasipu continued, "Grant that I shall not die in the daytime."

"Yes."

"Grant that I shall not die in the nighttime."

"Yes."

But by nature's arrangement, there is still another interval of time -- between day and night. [Laughing.] Hiranyakasipu forgot that. That interval of time is called sandhya. That is accepted in the Vedas. But Hiranyakasipu forgot that. Krsna is more intelligent than any of His creatures. So Hiranyakasipu was not killed in the daytime or the nighttime. He was killed in the sandhya, the interval between daytime and nighttime.

And as for land, sky, and water, that matter, also, was adjusted with tricks -- Krsna killed Hiranyakasipu on His lap. You cannot say that one's lap is land; you cannot say it is sky; you cannot say it is water.

So Krsna is so kind that because His devotee Brahma had given Hiranyakasipu all these benedictions, Krsna would kill Hiranyakasipu without touching all those points conceded by Brahma. In this way, Hiranyakasipu could not accuse Brahma that "Sir, you have cheated me."

"No," Brahma would be able to reply. "Whatever you wanted I have given you. You have cheated yourself. You did not know that your knowledge of the cosmic situation was imperfect. Nor could you make it perfect. So, that was your folly. Whatever you wanted, I said, ‘Yes, yes, yes.' At the same time I added, ‘In spite all of this, you cannot become immortal.' After all, that is not possible.

"But you -- you fool -- did not heed my warning. So despite your cunning, you remained a fool. You thought you were very intelligent, very cunning: ‘I am now fully equipped. Nobody can kill me.' "

Disciple: Srila Prabhupada, it seems Hiranyakasipu was acting much like a modern lawyer. He was trying like anything to find loopholes in the law.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: Oh, yes. A big lawyer is simply someone who is very expert at finding and exploiting weaknesses in the present law. That is the definition of a big lawyer.

Actually, these modern leaders are acting like big lawyers -- trying to be more intelligent than Krsna and His law. [Laughs.] These rascals are trying to be more intelligent. Therefore they are called mudhas -- rascals and fools.

Disciple: Moghasa.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: Ah.

moghasa mogha-karmano mogha-jnana vicetasah
raksasim asurim caiva prakrtim mohinim sritah

"Those who are thus bewildered are attracted by demonic and atheistic views. In that deluded condition, their hopes for liberation, their fruitive activities, and their culture of knowledge are all defeated." - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 9 “The Most Confidential Knowledge", Text 12. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/9/12/en

In Bhagavad-gita Krsna confirms, "Every atheistic rascal will see all his hopes, all his activities, all his so-called knowledge come to nothing. Such a rascal will be utterly baffled."

To begin with, Krsna asks such a simple thing:

sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah

"Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear." - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 18 “Conclusion: The Perfection of Renunciation", Text 66. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/18/66/en

"You just surrender unto Me. You'll get all protection." But the rascal says, "No, no. That is not possible. I must act according to my own whims. Why shall I surrender?"

"All right. Go on," Krsna says at last. "I'll give you all facility for executing your whims. You'll get it. You do whatever you like. Try your best."

This is going on. Krsna is giving good advice. But unfortunately, the rascal will not accept it. So Krsna is so kind that He says, "All right. You act in your own way. I shall give you all facility." That facility is Maya, the Lord's illusory energy. When the soul desires to leave the spiritual world, Maya gives him this material world and a materially affected mind by which he can try to lord it over. Actually, Maya gives him that mind so that she can punish him very severely.

So anyway, Maya has given us a clever, materially affected mind. "All right. Now you go on desiring illusory material enjoyment. You go on desiring and desiring, and I will give you facility."

Disciple: So our seemingly clever mind is really an agent of punishment.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: Yes. This material mind is just that. For instance, when you see a madman, you see he is not mindless. No. He has a mind. But that mind is polluted. That is why he is acting abnormally. His mind is there, but it is covered by some infection. Therefore, one moment a madman is thinking this way, the next moment that way, then again this way, and so on. That's all.

Disciple: Constant anxiety.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: Useless. Killing himself.

Disciple: Sometimes, Srila Prabhupada, a person who goes mad has to be put into a padded cell, so that he doesn't harm himself.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: Yes. Otherwise he will create danger for others. Similarly, this whole material world is a "padded cell" for those who have left the spiritual world. They must be kept within this padded cell, so that they can go on with their madness of mind without disturbing the sane and peaceful residents of the spiritual world.

Still, Krsna has kindly left the Vedic literature here, with instructions that "If you act this or that way, then you can promote yourself to this or that higher material planet.

And:
yanti deva-vrata devanpitrn yanti pitr-vratah
bhutani yan ti bhutejya yanti mad-yajino 'pi mam

"Those who worship the demigods will take birth among the demigods; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship ghosts and spirits will take birth among such beings; and those who worship Me will live with Me." - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 9 “The Most Confidential Knowledge", Text 25. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/9/25/en

"…if you act in devotional service, you can come to Me." But the soul who has gone mad will not take that instruction.

Disciple: Coming to Krsna means he'll have to give up all his mad desires.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: Yes, but all the instructions are there for escaping this material world and going home to Krsna's blissful abode. All the instructions are there. We simply have to accept them. If we don't accept them, we suffer. What can be done? If you accept the path leading to hell, in spite of higher authorities' instructions, then who can save you? That is going on.

Disciple: Rascals.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: Yes. A rascal is thinking he has become so very intelligent that he can deceive God, deceive the spiritual master, and be happy. He does not know that he can neither deceive God nor deceive His representative, the guru. That is not possible. But he is thinking like that, even though he is being put into one suffering condition after another. For instance, an ordinary thief or rogue thinks, "I am deceiving the government," even though the government has got so many agents that sooner or later he will be arrested. Of course, this sinful modern government may not be so expert, but how can some rascal deceive the government of Krsna? That is not possible.

Disciple: Krsna's undercover agents are everywhere.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: Everywhere, in every direction. They are bearing witness. And:

isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati
bhramayan sarva-bhutani yantrarudhani mayaya

"The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone's heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy." - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 18 “Conclusion: The Perfection of Renunciation", Text 61. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/9/25/en

…Krsna is sitting within the heart of everyone. How can you deceive Him?

Disciple: Krsna knows more about what's going on than we do.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami:

upadrastanumanta ca bharta bhokta mahesvarah
paramatmeti capy ukto dehe 'smin purusah parah

Yet in this body there is another, a transcendental enjoyer, who is the Lord, the supreme proprietor, who exists as the overseer and permitter, and who is known as the Supersoul. - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 13 “Nature the Enjoyer & Consciousnss", Text 23. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/13/23/en

ksetra-jnam capi mam viddhi sarva-ksetresu bharata
ksetra-ksetrajnayor jnanam yat taj jnanam matam mama
O scion of Bharata, you should understand that I am also the knower in all bodies, and to understand this body and its knower is called knowledge. That is My opinion. - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 13 “Nature the Enjoyer & Consciousnss", Text 3. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/13/3/en

Krsna is sitting within everyone's heart as the witness and permitter. So how can these rascals think, "I can deceive God"?

Disciple: Mayayapahrta-jnana. Vigata-jnana.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: Hmm. Vigata-jnana, yes. Their knowledge is stolen by illusion.

Disciple: Like children playing, they think that they've become a king or this or that, and they're completely absorbed in that illusion.

HDG A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami: Why "children playing"? In this age the father and mother are also playing.

This Issue Thoughtful Vedic Quote(s)

1. "A living entity's unlawful desire to become one with the Lord in every respect is the root cause of the entire material manifestation, for otherwise the Lord has no need to create such a manifestation, even for His pastimes. The conditioned soul, under the spell of the external energy of the Lord, falsely suffers many unfortunate incidents in material life. The Lord is the predominator of the external energy, maya, whereas the living entity is predominated by the same maya under the material condition. The false attempt of the living entity to occupy the predominating post of the Lord is the cause of his material bondage, and the conditioned soul's attempt to become one with the Lord is the last snare of maya." – Srimad Bhagavat Purana Canto 3, “The Status Quo” Chapter 7, “Further Inquiries by Vidura,” Text 16. 3. "I owed a magnificent day to the Bhagavad-gita. It was the first of books; it was as if an empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy, but large, serene, consistent, the voice of an old intelligence which in another age and climate had pondered and thus disposed of the same questions which exercise us.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Bhaktivedanta Preaches Vigorously In India

In fear that he one may run off and become a full time sedhu under the tutelage fo Bhaktivedanta Swami, a wealthy parent purchases the Bhara Bhavan property right out from under Bhaktivedanta Swami and then evicts him. IN this way she shut down his preaching in Jhansi. But Bhattievedant Swami is not deterred. He moves to Vrindaban Indian, and established his residence at the Radha Damodara temple where he is able to commit himself more to writing and distributing Vaishnava literature. He has his books printed in Deli and sells them to the public as his only source of income.

Bhaktivedanta Swami Leaves for America

Bhaktivedanta Sami realizes that the most effective way for him to carry out the orders of his spiritual master is to actually travel to American and try, despite all the odds against him, to establish his “League Of Devotees” in the Western world. He begs transportation on a tramp steamship from Sumati Morarji of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company for a complimentary passage to the United States. While on the four-week journey he experiences a heart-attach and prays to Krishna for his safe passage. Eventually he arrives at Butler Pennsylvania and finds his way to the family who agreed to sponsor his visit to America. Bhaktivedanta Swami charms his hosts who become enchanted by his character, wisdom and devotion. He then begins to lecture at the University of Pennsylvania and attracts the attention of some students who find his message far more attractive and endearing then the local impersonalist professor.

Ojai Time Warner Channel 10 Scheduled Broadcasts:

In December of 2008 the Time Warner contract for providing Public Access television to the people of the Ojai Valley expired. The city of Ojai has discussed a variety of alternative solutions to replace this important vehicle for expressing free speech and the broadcast of low budget local films.

To the best of my knowledge an agreement has been made between the city of Ojai and the local Board of Education which authorizes the High School to step in and keep Public Access operating in Ojai. This is a brilliant move because it relieves the City from the concerns it has in relation to staffing a broadcast office while simultaneously giving the older students to learn how to actually run a functional television broadcasting office.

I recently met with the appropriate individuals from the school board to inform them of my interest in restarting the AVA Educational Video series as soon as everything is ready for operations. I have been told that the School system is ready to go, but apparently there are still several petty issues that need to be resolve by the City before broadcasting can commence. Hopefully that will occur before too much longer and we be given the green light to start broadcasting again. At that time I will advise the Ojai readers regarding what time and which channel they can find the AVA educational hour on

Readers Input Requested
It is unclear where the future of Cable Television for Ojai is going. In order to get AVA shows broadcast to the Ojai public I am willing to meet with whomever the appropriate people are to reopen this wonderful educational venue. If anyone can provide me with information relevant to this issue then please call me if there is something I can do to achieve this intended end result. –Thank you. (805) 640-0405 c/o mayesvara dasa

Standing Notices:
Invitation to Everyone Who Receives This Newsletter!
The purpose of this newsletter is to seek out and invite anyone who is serious about real spiritual growth to come join us for a great evening of Krishna Katha, (Discussions about Krishna), Krishna Prasadam, (Wonderful Vegetarian Dinner first offered to Krishna with Love) and Krishna Nama-Bhajanas. (Glorification of Krishna's names and Pastimes in Sanskrit.) 1st & 3rd Tuesday of every month. Reservations are NOT required. (805) 640-0405

Invitation to Fellow Vaishnavas!

Vaishnavas who have experience speaking on the transcendental name, fame, and pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Sri Krishna are invited to contact AVA if you would like to speak atone of our programs. The AVA congregation meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month with special events held to celebrate Janmastami and Gour Purnima. If you are in the area, or would like to visit with us for the evening, please let us know of that desire and we will schedule a date and work out the details for when you can speak.
This invitation is extended to any male of female initiated member of Lord Caitanya's Brahma-Madva Gaudia Sampraday Sankirtan tree. Our mood is that of transcendental collaboration for the glorification of Krishna sans niti-katha. Those who are interested in leading kirtan, or assisting in the preparation of the FREE Vegetarian feast are also invited to contact us so we can make the necessary arrangements to accommodate you.

Vegetarian Cooking!

We are happy to see how nicely the AVA congregational members are improving their Vegetarian culinary skills! Adopting a diet that allows other creatures to live their lives peacefully is a tradition that extends way back in both Vedic as well as Buddhist traditions. One would think that all serious transcendentalists would understand this simple principal, but unfortunately that does not appear to be true.

Educating people about the importance of a Vegetarian diet is essential for anyone who is serious about escaping the serious laws of karma delineated in the Vedas. Unfortunately there are many teachers who will compromise the importance of the Vegetarian diet in order to attract more followers and promote their own watered down ideas about what real spiritual maturity is all about.

AVA is committed to teaching the science of Self Realization the way it has been handed down and respected by the great sages for thousands of generations. That is why part of the service we offer is to teach anyone who is interested in this process how to eat properly.

Those who are raised in a carnivorous society but then want to convert to a Vegetarian diet often experience a lot of cognitive dissonance. On one hand, they are intellectually convinced that they ought to be a vegetarian, but they simply don't know how to convert their diet over to that lifestyle. Instead of postponing that on-going dilemma, why not consider learning how to cook wonderful Vegetarian foods using herbs and spices that not only taste good, but also make eating a tremendously fulfilling experience! You can do that prior to any AVA meeting where we always prepare a nice meal for all the guests who attend. Those who want to learn this tremendous skill are advised to contact us 36 hours prior to the AVA event so we can tell you what and when we will be cooking for that program. You can then join us at that time and start learning how to adopt the eating habits recommended in the Vedas for Human life, which is also the most beneficial for rapid spiritual maturity. :-)

Public Engagements?

As the AVA newsletter continues to find new audiences, some have asked about the possibility of bringing the subjects we discuss into other gatherings. If it is possible to schedule those requests we will be happy to do so as part of our service to the community. For this purpose AVA has compiled a list of contemporary subjects for which we have essays, books, charts, graphs, and in some cases, videos to augment our presentations. For more information about scheduling an engagement to learn more about the Vedic Siddhanta (conclusion) please contact us directly.

Suggest A Subject?

Many of the subjects we cover in the "AVA Newsletter" come from questions or topics that are only vaguely commented on by other sources. If you have a subject you would like us to address, please send the question in to us and we will consider it for a future AVA topic. Simple questions are also addressed during the "Bhagavad-Gita Fellowship" meetings for the benefit of all those who attend.

Vedic Authority

What makes the AVA program different from all other contemporary sources of transcendental learning? We rely on the methodical, thorough and scientific way the Vedas portray the world we live in. The Vedas are so vast, and unlike any other literature known to man, they are often criticized as confusing and esoteric. But this is because the secret of the Vedas can only be unlocked by one who has been properly trained how to "decode" them. Although that sounds like an exhausting study, it is actually quite easy if the candidate is willing to accept instruction from a good source. In fact, the path of Bhakti (Loving Devotion to the Supreme Lord in His Personal Form) is so powerful that the essences of all the Vedas become automatically realized to that soul who surrenders to the Personality of Godhead and engages in devotional service to Him.

"A person who accepts the path of devotional service is not bereft of the results derived from studying the Vedas, performing austere sacrifices, giving charity or perusing philosophical and furtive activities. Simply by performing devotional service he attains all these and at the end he reaches the supreme eternal abode." - Bhagavad-Gita Gita As It Is Chapter 8 "Attaining the Supreme" Text 28. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/8/28/en

To grow transcendentally requires a reliable authority like the Bhagavad-Gita, (The torchlight of knowledge, Bg. 10.11) One is free to reject Vedic authority, but the consequences of doing so returns one to the words of speculation, conjecture, flawed empirical analysis, and a plethora of silly ideas about what spiritual life is from psycho-therapists, self declared gurus, charlatans, and carpetbag religionists, to name just a few.

Back Issues of AVA Newsletter

The subjects that we have already covered in 2005 are also included at the end of this newsletter. If you would like a digital copy of a past "AVA Newsletter," let us know and we will be happy to forward it to you for your further erudition.

AVA MISSION

Honor & Respect All the Magnanimous Souls

The American Vedic Association is an humble attempt to carry on with the mission of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. In the Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna unambiguously states:

udarah sarva evaite jnani tv atmaiva me matam
asthitah sa hi yuktatma mam evanuttamam gatim

"ALL these devotees are undoubtedly magnanimous souls, but he who is situated in knowledge of Me I consider to be just like My own self. Being engaged in My transcendental service, he is sure to attain Me, the highest and most perfect goal." - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter7 “Knowledge of the Absolute’, Text 18. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/7/18/en

This mood is further clearly confirmed by Krishnadasa Kaviraj Goswami in the Caitainya Caritamrita:

vande sri-krsna-caitanya- premamara-taroh priyan
sakha-rupan bhakta-ganan krsna-prema-phala-pradan

"I offer my obeisances to ALL the dear devotees of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the eternal tree of love of Godhead. I offer my respects to ALL the branches of the tree, the devotees of the Lord who distribute the fruit of love of Krsna. ." - Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita Adi Lila, Chapter 10. "The Trunk, Branches and Subbranches of the Caitanya Tree" Text 7" - LINK: http://caitanyacaritamrta.com/adi/10/7/en

It is therefore clear that anyone who is properly trained in the science of self realization as handed down in the Gaudia Vaishnav tradition is a "Magnanimous Soul" and therefore deserves ALL respects. Based on this simple fact the American Vedic Association welcomes ALL Vaishnavas to participate in AVA events regardless of which branch on Lord Caitanya's sankirtan tree they may have studied with or current doctrinal disputes.

To any close observer it is evident that His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami single handedly completely revolutionized the concept of yoga, meditation, Self Realization and religion in the Western world. He did this by introducing the Vedic Siddhanta which clearly delineates the three different levels of God Realization which culminates in Bhagavan Realization.
"Learned transcendentalists who know the Absolute Truth call this nondual substance Brahman1, Paramatma2 or Bhagavatam3. -Srimad Bhagavat Purana Canto 1, "Creation" , Chapter 2, "Divinity & Divine Service", Text 11. LINK: http://vedabase.net/sp/1/2/11/en

The symptoms of Bhagavan Realization are evident when the aspiring transcendentalist finally understands, accepts, and surrenders to Krishna the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
"And of all yogis, the one with great faith who always abides in Me, thinks of ME within himself, and renders transcendental loving service to Me, He is the most intimately united with Me in yoga and is the highest of all. That is My opinion. - Bhagavad Gita As It Is, Chapter 6 “Sankya Yoga’, Text 47. LINK: http://bhagavadgitaasitis.com/6/47/en

Expose the Shortcomings of Impersonalism and Voidism

Based on the strength of the Vedas, Bhaktivedanta Swami also taught that the greatest threat to the welfare of the world, society, economy and world peace etc, was the irrational self-centered sophistry of the Non-Dual and voidists schools of transcendence. This is further confirmed by Lord Caitanya Himself:

"Sripad Sankaracaray has describe all the Vedic Literatures in terms of indirect meanings. One who hears such explanations is ruined." – Sri Caitanya Caritamrita Adi Lila, Chapter 7. "Lord Caitanya in Five Features" Text 109". LINK: http://caitanyacaritamrta.com/adi/7/109/en

"Sankaracarya, who is an incarnation of Lord Siva is faultless because he is a servant carrying out the orders of the Lord. But those who follow his Mayavadi Philosophy are doomed. They will lose all their advancement in spiritual knowledge." - Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita Adi Lila, Chapter 7. "Lord Caitanya in Five Features" Text 114". LINK: http://caitanyacaritamrta.com/adi/7/114/en

The Non-Dual Advaita School was introduced by Sankaracarya and is also referred to as Mayavadi philosophy. The Voidist traditions are taught primarily by the followers of Lord Buddha. It is ironic that Sripad Sankaracarya is accepted as Lord Siva working under the instruction of Lord Krishna for the specific purpose of deluding those who are not willing to surrender. It is equally curious that Lord Buddha is also accepted as an incarnation of Lord Krishna. In both cases Krishna has tricking those who can not grasp his original form as the Surpreme Personalty of Godhead. By appearing in these forms he has made it possible every for the impersonaist to appreciate Him indirectly in a less personal way as one of his immediate expansions. Both of these points make for an interesting discussion but I will not elaborate on this any more here.

It is primarily because the followers of Christianity and Islam have failed so miserably to set a good example that the mass of the population is turning away from the classic "God" centered religions and are now starting to adopt these atheistic faiths. The alternative to this dire scenario requires rethinking the prudence of embracing impersonalism and voidism but as stated above, once the mind has become contaminated with the word juggling rhetoric of the faithless it is very difficult to grasp the concept of God as a Person, ie: Bhagavan Realization.
Therefore out of all the numerous and extraordinary things that His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivanta Swami Prabhupada taught in the Western World, exposing the futility of these misguided traditions was arguably his foremost mission. This is clearly evident in the Sanskrit Pranama mantra which he was honored by during his physical presence and continues to be eulogized by to this day:

namas te sarasvate deve gaura-vani-pracarine nirvisesa-sunyavadi-pascatya-desa-tarine.

“We offer our respects unto you, the student of Sarasvati Gosvami. You are kindly teaching the message of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu for the purpose of delivering the Western World from impersonalism and voidism."

For this reason it is also the mission of the American Vedic Association to help the conditioned souls philosophically understand where and how these impersonal traditions fail to meet both the needs of the eternal soul, as well as why they can not possibly resolve the numerous social ills that plague the peace and solvency of all the worlds peoples. It is not our intention to offend any of our friends who may currently be involved with these other practices only inform them of a historical point of view they may not currently be familiar with. If anyone wishes to understand any of these points in greater detail you are encouraged to join us at one of our bi-monthly meetings where we will be happy to thoroughly answer all your questions based on the strength of Vedic Authority.

Why This Newsletter Was Sent to You & the AVA Purpose This newsletter is being sent to you because someone felt you might have an interest in the "Science of Self Realization" as it is explained in the Vedic literature of ancient India. It is posted twice a month and its primary purpose is to remind the American Vedic Association congregation to attend the bi-monthly Bhagavad-Gita Gita Appreciation Gathering that is held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month.
The material presented in these newsletters is based on the conclusions of the Vedic Literature as understood by India's foremost authorities on that subject namely, Lord Brahma, Maharaja Pariksit, Narada Muni, Madhavacarya, Ramanujacarya, Krishna Dasa Kaviraja, Narotama Das Thakur, the Six Goswami's of Vrindaban, Bhaktivenode Thakur and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to name just a few. The purpose of this correspondence is to help readers properly explain Sanskrit terms, clarify misunderstandings about Indian theology, and make the Vedic conclusion more accessible to the Western mind.
Questions are always welcome, and may be integrated into future newsletters. It is our hope that you will find the content to be informative and meaningful. It is also an invitation for you to consider joining us at one of our bi-monthly Bhagavad-Gita as It Is meetings if you happen to be within a reasonable driving distance from Ojai, California, USA.
Must Say No?
Most people are familiar with the Biblical advice given in the "Sermon on the Mount"
"Give not what is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine. Lest they trample them under their feet, and turn against and rend* you." - Bible, Matthew Chapter7, Text 6. (*rend = tear you apart violently.)
This is not only a common theme found in all great scriptures, yet even secular teachers have no interest in trying to explain something to a defiant student. Therefore, if you prefer not to receive any further information about the Vedas, AVA events, or the process of spiritual growth honored by the great sages of ancient India, then simply request to be taken off of our mailing list. We will lament seeing you go when we do, but will gladly comply with your request.
"Bewildered by the modes of material nature, the ignorant fully engage themselves in material activities and become attached. But the wise should not unsettle them, although these duties are inferior due to the performer's lack of knowledge. "- Bhagavad Gita As It Is; Chapter 3 Karma Yoga Text 29. Thank you for your patience and interest!
